Promoting the professionalism of the Security Manager

Today’s Professional Security Managers are required to constantly develop their skills and knowledge in the many aspects that their ever-changing roles demand. A major requirement is to enable tomorrow’s Security Managers to gain recognised professional qualifications.

Many Security Managers currently specialise in some area of expertise, such as Computer (IT) Security, Company Fraud, Risk Management, Personal Protection, and Equipment (Systems) Development. Tomorrow’s managers need to have in-depth knowledge of all these subjects and more. This will lead to not only a more professional person, but also a ‘more employable’ individual able to command respect and remuneration in a fast-changing world.

The Institute advances the interests of its members and the security industry through forums to which it belongs as well as direct to Government. By ensuring that ISM members have a voice on all and any matters affecting them, it promotes and secures future development of the Security Profession.

Members are encouraged to take an active part in the endeavours and ethos of the Institute, to communicate with one another and help fellow Members.

The Institute of Security Management evolved out of concern that the experience and expertise of Security Managers was not being recognised and used effectively. To benefit individual managers and the Security Industry as a whole, a recognised platform was needed to represent their views.  So the ISM was formed in 1988 by a small group of Security Managers, with current membership about 150.

Continuously, from its inception, the ISM has promoted the professionalism of the Security Manager and taken up the cause of the Security Industry in many areas. The ISM supports the tireless efforts of other, well established and duly recognised, professional and regulatory organisations within the security industry.  This is considered particularly important when related to the academic progress of the security professional within our industry.  The ISM, from its foundation, championed the regulation of the security industry and supports the Security Industry Authority in its licensing and quality assurance accreditation processes.

 

The ISM is now firmly established, with both national and international Members who have a direct influence upon an estimated quarter of a million personnel and millions of pounds of resources within the Security Industry.  It is recognised as having an influence on change within the Security Profession, outside organisations and the authorities.

Commerce and Industry is dependent on professional Security Managers to be proactive, to use and develop new concepts to protect all corporate assets including not only personnel, tangible physical items, and the intangible, such as information, but also corporate reputation, ethics and profits.
